Organ or Fireplace??

We picked up this pump organ at a recent auction. We buy organs whenever we can get our hands on them - and if they are at a price we can afford. The possibilities with organs are absolutely ENDLESS - cuz there are so many interesting parts on them both inside and out. Thank goodness my husband Mike is so handy. They weigh a ton to haul, they take hours and hours to take apart (at least if you want to save the parts!!), and there is a lot of waste even for us. But the end result is usually a lot of fun and pretty spactacular. The first photo below is the organ at the auction - the second photo is a fireplace mantel we put together from the organ. We have had a lot of fun designing these - sometimes you have to get pretty creative with the pieces and it is a hard job for Mike as there is a lot of creative carpentry that has to happen to get them together! My design vision for the pieces doesn't always mesh with the practical aspect of making it work!! We'll have a mantel (or maybe 2!) in our area for the December sale. See what you think!
Also note the piece inside the mantel - a coal scuttle filled with white lights, a long strand of beautiful garland and an old violin, clarinet, and trumpet. Very festive looking right? And not the usual logs and greens. Just about anything can be a festive holiday piece with a little embellishment!

So whadda ya'll think of my fun little pretties??? Picked these little goodies up at an auction this weekend - along with a bunch of other way cool stuff - and I so anxious to work with them!! Is there anything better than clock parts???? Lots more funky gears, and faces and lenses and cases and a few things that I have never seen before!! I am hoping to unload everything tomorrow and have time to go thru it all. Just like Christmas!!!! Got some AWESOME vintage beauty salon chairs too - you know the ones with vinyl seats and backs, chrome frames, and black armrests???? They must have been in every beauty salon in the country!!! I can remember sitting in one waiting for my mom on Saturday morning at her standing appointment! I am wondering how they would look pulled up to a sleek black dining room table? Hmmmmmmm........................................Oh yeah, did I mention all of the band instruments and the marching band hats??????????????? Every time I look at the hats I think of phenomenal tablescapes!! I'll keep you posted.....................

It's A Small World Afterall!

Each and every sale has memorable moments in one way or another - something that we all giggle or whine or snicker about - usually it is something stupid that one of us has done. We also ALWAYS have great and uplifting moments from our customers - who come in and share a story, a laugh, a joke, update us on their lives and let us know how much they love the shop.
The most memorable moment of the November sale was this gal in the photo (and if any of you know her would you let me know her name cuz in the craziness of it all - I FORGOT!!). She came up to the desk carrying this postcard and said look at this. It was a postcard dated from the early 1920's addressed to Miss Somebody in Cottonwood, Minnesota. The gal said, "I am originally from Cottonwood, and I know this lady. She was a friend of my mother's and is still alive and in a nursing home!" Hope I got that right - just can't find my notes from that day!
WOW - what are the chances??? She was tickled to take this treasure home - and we were all pleased to share the moment with her!

Veteran's Day Thanks

Hey folks - this post has absolutely nothing to do with junking or SHR - but is a personal note from me.

Today is Veteran's Day. It is easy to forget that - except for the great sales at the mall. But I am wishing that each and every one of you take a few minutes to remember all of the men and women who have given their lives, or limbs, or time to protect this country for the rest of us.

I was just a little too young to have friends who served in Nam, but later in life I dated a man who had served. He came home with medals of bravery - and a pretty messed up head. He was greeted by his family as a hero - and had people on the streets spit on him and throw garbage at him for being a vet.

My father was just a little to young to have served in WWII. He was born in Willmar, MN - the 5th child of Norwegian immigrant parents. His mother didn't acclimate to America well - so they made the decision to move back to Norway. My grandmother and my father and his younger brother and 2 younger sisters went on ahead to Norway while my grandpa stayed behind to sell the house and business. WWII broke out and my grandpa couldn't travel to Norway. My father's 3 older brothers joined the service and served in Europe and Northern Africa. My grandfather died in Willmar - my grandmother died in Norway. My father - being the oldest child in Norway had to quit school at 14 and be the man of the family - he took care of his mother and younger siblings - through the occupation and after. He talked about the German occupation of Norway - he would never eat fish again because the Nazi's confiscated the cows, pigs, and chickens. He said we ate fish for breakfast, lunch and dinner - NEVER AGAIN!!

One day while working in the field with his sister the Nazi's confiscated them for a work program. They were taken by boat down to Oslo, Norway and were not allowed to take anything or say goodbye to their mother. At some point in Oslo a Nazi officer made them sign away their American citizenship and proclaim allegiance to Germany. Then he allowed them to return home because my father was the "head" of the family. On their return they found their mother had aged years - thinking that they were dead. And their youngest sister wouldn't talk to them because they had gotten to go on an adventure - and she hadn't!!! She was too young to understand.

My father returned to America in the 1950's, met my mother and stayed. But I will always remember him saying in his thick Norwegian accent - "Norway is my homeland, but America is my home - and it is the GREATEST country in the world!"

So anyway - just a reminder to us all that we are privileged to live in "the GREATEST country in the world" because of the people like my uncles who served in WWII, Barb's father who was at the Battle of the Bulge, my great uncle who went MIA in WWI, my friends who served in Vietnam, my older cousin who served in Korea, Nicole's husband who served in the Gulf, and my husband who served in the army during peace time.

Please remember all of our service men and women today. How lucky we are to have them.

I wanted to take tons and tons of photos of all of you during the sale - had my camera with - and was just so busy writing up at the desk, or helping to carry out, or helping find the right items, or re-stocking that I only got my camera out a couple of times! Two fun and talented and creative gals for sure. Check out their blogs!
