February Is Getting Closer and Closer!!

Every day a few more treasures trickle in! We've got it all this month folks - colors, neutrals, retro, primitive, industrial, traditional, cottage, shabby chic - and tons of stuff that falls somewhere in between all of that! Here are some new things I found today!! Kind of hard to see but that table is on a cast iron base that goes up and down and allows you to keep the tabletop in place or swivel it around. It is really cool - and the oak top started life as the top of a buffet!

You just can't have enough signs - and we'll have plenty - in all shapes, sizes and styles!

This great old trunk started life as a shipping crate - it is addressed to Macalester College!!

I just love white ironstone!! Plenty here to choose from!

Boat seat chairs as shelves!

I love the spring feeling of this great blue shutter with the green dresser behind it!

A beautiful set of white and gold dinnerware - and a perfect cupboard to display them.

It's Beginning To Look Like A February Sale!!

Most of us still have a long, long way to go to get set up and look spectacular - but the treasures are starting to roll in! This February sale is gonna knock your socks off I think!!! This vintage upholstered chair is so comfy - and has great carved feet!

You can always count on Susan for great color and fabrics!

I LOVE Susan's newspapered wall - and the round map! One more item on my want list!

Two matching red slipper chairs - loving the color!

This ottoman is another great upholstered piece - and it's comfy and the right height to be a great coffee table as well!

You just can't go wrong with botanical prints!

There is a great long work table with silver legs and apron and then tucked under that is this great industrial almost round table with metal legs - the back side of the table is flat so you could push it up to the wall and still have the feel of a round table! And tucked under that is a great warehouse cart!

Another piece on my want list - this great industrial metal serving cart or work station or small island - let it be whatever you need it to be!

Oh the crystals on this chandelier - it makes me feel like I should be speaking French!

Another piece on my want list - this chandelier is drop dead gorgeous! It appears black, but is actually a dark amethyst and sometimes almost has a red cast to it. It is so very pretty!

Can you say ooh la la???????

Another great industrial piece - the trays on the bottom actually lift out! Put some wine bottles in the top - along with some great snacks and you are ready to go!

There is a matched set of these - hmmmmm, another want list item!

Cindy was working on this piece - the color in person is perfectly neutral and the piece is great!

Cindy also has some great vintage linens and pillows coming in - just gotta love fabric!

I am so in love with this trunk! Can't wait to see it all set up!

A Preview of Barb's February Spot!

No we don't love Barb best (altho we do love her TONS and TONS!!) and we don't think she has the best junk of all (altho we are all constantly amazed and astounded and inspired by her!) and no she didn't bribe us to do an entire posting on her spot alone (altho after seeing this it could be a possibility!!) - but as I have mentioned countless times before - Barb is almost always the first one done so I always get more photos of her spot first! And this time she is not only first but she is PHENOMENAL as well! Like this table center piece for instance!!! Beautiful and so simple and elegant!

Changes at SHR!!

Hope you all had wonderful holidays and are enjoying 2012!! We loved having some time off - but we missed all of you terribly! One of the nice parts about having some extra time off was some changes that happened to the building. Brad has been working like crazy on these floors - do you remember this middle area that had terrible old grey indoor/outdoor carpet in it?? Well no more - Brad managed to tear up carpet and tile and linoleum to get down to these floors below! We LOVE how they turned out!

Rose is taking over the hallway area and she re-did this wall with pieces of old lathe that she saved from some construction at her home! Isn't this phenomenal????? I want to do this in my house!

In the front room Brad installed this awesome barnwood on the wall on the right side as you enter. It makes such an incredible backdrop - I just know that everything on that side is going to look even better now!
AND OF COURSE you know we are working on lots of goodies and treasures to fill up these new spaces! I'll get some photos of that up shortly! We are starting the countdown now.....February 2nd is almost here and we want to get re-acquainted!!

The entire Johnson family - along with the whole SHR Family want to pass on our wishes for good health, good cheer, family, friends, laughter, prosperity, growth and much, much love to all of you! We couldn't do what we do without all of you - so we are mighty thankful to all of you that keep coming back to see us month after month! We are taking January off - but we will see you at 9am sharp on February 2th! Until then............much love!

Christmas with Kris and Mike!

Come on up to St. Cloud for a visit to our home! I just got my Christmas tree up today finally and still have more inside decorating to do - but I do have some outside things done! This is next to my front steps - greens, cones, birch bark, some dried stems from the garden and a simple sign. In the summer this piece is filled with flowers.

I used this great old fishing net piece on the wall next to my front door instead of a wreath this year. Again, simple greens, twigs and rose hips.

Greens tied to one of my pieces of garden art - and at night it is lit up with multi-colored lights.

I have a thing for windmills of all sizes - I love the red rose hips and the dried clematis growing up it. In the summer the roses and clematis fight for space on the windmill!

On the other side of my front door my bicycle gets greened up too!

Next to my back door...........

At the back of the house beneath my kitchen window. A big old grain scale sits in the garden with my favorite bird house on top of it and a wreath hung from it. In the summer it is surrounded by perennials and vines that grow up behind it.

Now my planters are filled with cones, greens, twigs and small pots.

Our living room is teeny tiny and our skinny tree is actually standing in front of the front door that we never use! Since I was so behind this year with my decorating and I haven't started shopping or baking yet I didn't take the time to dig out any of my beautiful Christmas ornaments and decor. I just used stuff from my "junk" boxes to decorate!

We have a thing for horse stuff at our house - these great ribbons and vintage ice cream boxes made for fun decorations! I sprinkled glitter on pine cones and grabbed some of Mike's many motorcycles from his collection (he is a Harley owner!).

Love the colors and graphics on bingo cards, vintage toys that I already had and some vintage reflectors.

A piece of beautiful old horse tack!

The heart is another piece of horse tack - and since our last name is Hart...........

I used vintage burlap sacks as a tree skirt and set a pail of pine cones and greens in the corner in front of ski poles and a single ski. The log cabin was a gift from me to Mike many years ago.

I love this old Sears Roebuck tag!

Our tree topper this year is a vintage sign from a hardware store! Mike is an antique tool collector and had a few great old signs - so it seemed to be a good idea! Well, as you can see - we never do anything too expected at our house! I miss my beloved ornaments - but I love my junk tree! It is so much of who we are now!

Christmas with Barb!

I am going to try my best to get to a few homes this week and share Christmas with some of the SHR family. Gonna start with Barb - cuz she was home! I love Barb's home and her decor. She is kind of a traditionalist, kind of a minimalist, with contemporary and primitive thrown in! Didn't get a photo of her tree - which is decorated with the most beautiful vintage ornaments - but these other ideas are wonderful in their simplicity! This is the bell on her garage - just simple greens tied on it.

The bench on her back porch. Don't you just love it? Looks like she's ready to sit down and put on her skates!

In her garden - the greens and the red berries are all this little cherub needs.

The swing on her front porch - love the wreath sitting on the swing instead of on the wall!

Her Merry Christmas sign - do you see what it was? A side rail from a bed!

A piece of Rose's art - with her own little garland!

I love this hanging scale of Barb's. Some day I am going to sneak it out of her house! And I love the simplicity of the pine cone!

On the dining room table - the mix of gold and shiny with pine cones.

The mantel in her living room - I LOVE the two gray pillars (I gave them to her for Christmas hehehe!!!). Everything Barb does is so simple and so elegant.

Decorating Ideas from Brad and Amy's Home

Brad and Amy were kind enough to host our SHR Christmas party at their home - and were also kind enough to let me take lots of photos to share with all of you! You are going to have to excuse some of the photos tho - a new camera and I am still learning about settings - but you'll get the ideas anyhow!!
This was taken in their office - these very tall square columns are on each side of the desk with an old barn door as the back drop. Their western collection of saddle, horns, hats, and chaps help adorn this wall.

Don't you just love this great old garage door as the headboard? It is incredible!

Again in the master - they have white furniture and linens mixed in with the old dark woods - it is a great combination of old and new!

Love the nite stands - his side with a vintage fur man's cap.....

And hers with a vintage woman's fur hat!

At the foot of the bed this beautiful old trunk! Love the tote as the picture holder! And I kept trying to figure out how I was going to fit the huge gauge in my pocket!

In the dining room over the buffet - this huge old window, a pair of shutters someone was tossing and a feather wreath they bought at a garage sale!

The fireplace in the dining room was so festive! Love the large glass of ornaments - and the great old wheel as art!

The fireplace in the living room - very simple mantel!

The Christmas tree in the living room - and I am most fond of the vintage water ski's just hanging around! The tree was filled with white lights - and what was most interesting about it was that they had used 3 sizes of lights and it looked amazing!

Warehouse cart as coffee table - you know how much we love our warehouse carts!! You can kick them, jump on them, sit on them, spill on them - and they just keep looking better and better!

On the stairway landing - the buffet/storage piece they found at a garage sale, bought the pink pony at SHR and a new mirror - what a great combination! Add some greens, hang a few ornaments from the chandelier and you have instant Christmas!

The window over the kitchen sink looked fabulously simple with clear ornaments and greens and lights on the sill.

They have some of the greatest vintage fans ever - and this one on top of this great table - yep, I tried sneaking it out but just couldn't make it happen!

Fireplace mantel in the basement family room! It was so funny to walk in and see the Holiday Inn sign - one that I had done years ago and they bought long before they were part of SHR!

A built in desk/game station area on one side of the basement housed this great small bike in the corner! Thought it was a great idea!

A new piece for game storage and family photos - and I love the vintage skis and suitcase just plopped in the corner!

Vintage piano and another of their great vintage fans - and a piece of an old windmill as art!

Over the bar area was this great architectural piece and three vintage boat cushions - love, love, love! Unfortunately, I couldn't reach them or they would have been in my car too!

Build in buffet/storage in the eating/gaming section of the basement with an old keg as art.

Just gotta love this toboggan table in the hall! It simply rests on a long console table - when you don't want the toboggan - take it off!

One of the 2 tables in the eating/gaming area! They re-did this one and just added mix and match chairs to it and the banquette! A perfect combination!

The Bud's Christmas Story

Once upon a time in a village called Buffalo there lived a clan of little people called Buds. Now this was a happy little clan of people who loved to dance and sing and laugh and be silly and they all loved each other very much. BUT most of all, the Buds loved to create things. They would sneak out in the night and scavenge dumpsters and burn piles and roadside ditches and trash heaps and then drag all of their treasures back to the castle.

The excitement they shared upon their return was contagious as they all turned everything over and over and ooohed and aaaahed and shared all of their ideas for the wonderful things they would make with their “treasures”. They divided them up – each taking the things that they could turn into the best creations. And soon their workshops were abuzz with the sounds of hammers and drills and paint brushes and glue guns and staple guns. Soon there would be piles of treasures turned into beautiful tables and buffets and chairs and lamps and trunks and beds and cupboards – and some of their treasures turned into wonderful works of art and doodads and thingamajigs and whatchamacallits and whoseits.

When Christmas time came around the Buds got even more excited and went into over drive! The commotion in the workshops was intense! The hammers hammered faster and the drills drilled louder and the paint brushes slapped in overtime as the clan worked with their treasures turning them into extra special wonderfully awesome treasures to share with everyone! They added bits of sparkle and ribbon and greenery and stars and glitter to their treasures – all the while shouting out Christmas carols as they worked! Soon their piles of finished treasures was stacked to the ceilings – in fact some of them were hanging from the ceilings – and they had to move some of them out in front of the castle to make room for everything!

The Buds were so proud of all of their treasures and were sure that there were others out there like them who would LOVE treasures made out of other treasures – so they decided to open the castle doors on December 1,2,3 and 4 to let the entire world share in their excitement! Then they decided treasures weren’t enough – they would serve coffee and cookies, and give presents, and stay open late on Thursday nite, and sing carols and wear funny hats and share not just their treasures – but their love as well!

So, they have asked me to let you know that they will be waiting on Thursday, December 1^st at 9am and will stay open all the way til 9pm – and then do it all over again on Friday and Saturday from 9 to 6 and on Sunday from 10 to 5! AND IF THAT WASN’T ENOUGH – they are going to open up the castle doors again on Saturday, December 10 and Saturday, December 17 from 9 to 6 both days to give even more of you a chance to share in all of their treasures! (Be sure to check facebook and the blog for loads and loads of photos!)

December Shopping Special Events!!

The December sale is getting closer and closer - December 1,2,3,4!! And we are planning all sorts of treats for you guys! Treats and presents and fun and caroling - we even decided to do an evening of candlelight shopping with hors'du'voures - just for you! We will be open on Thursday, December from 9am to 9pm - with our special treats and candlelight from 6 - 9! Be sure to save that evening to spend with us!

AND - due to popular demand - we have decided to be open Saturday, December 10 and Saturday, December 17 from 9am to 6pm for those last minute shopping needs! And of course you know how we roll - We will be re-stocked for those dates too!!

Just think of how much fun you can have in December - spending all that time with us! And in the meantime, we are busy little elves getting the place all sparkly and shiny and starry and filled with sugarplums and all sorts of other good things - pictures coming soon!

One of the best things about shopping at SHR is looking for inspiration for your home. We look to each other for inspiration too. We all love using everyday items for holiday decorating - like this great frog box filled with white lites!

We are all such suckers for clocks - big and small!

We are also all suckers for old telephones and scales - and here we have the best of both! I think it is a Hot Line to Santa!

Who can't use a great dresser - use it in so many rooms. Just because it started life as a dresser doesn't mean it has to always remain one! Could be a buffet, or an entryway piece, or hold a TV - use your imagination!

Signs, Signs, Everywhere Signs!

For some reason or another November is sign month at SHR! This is just a sampling of what is there - and there are tons of holiday themed signs just waiting to be snapped up.
I am particularly fond of this huge (4' x 5') double sided sign! I would like to do an entire room around this sign!

This one is also huge (4'x8') and double sided too. The colors on it are so spectacular - what a statement piece huh?

Cindy has quite a few of these small airport signs each saying something different.

I love the simplicity of this - and the fact that it is done on an old piece of metal.

We have been giggling over this one since it came in. So odd don't you think?

Love this old Mobil Oil sign - yeah, I know it's in tough shape - but it still has such beauty!

The chuck wagon sign is a Lions sign on the other side!

Apparently Dr. Zimbeck was a family doc in Maynard, MN in the 30's and 40's.

I'm such a sucker for anything with a cow on it! And hidden behind the Lions sign is a vintage homemade sign that says Theresa's Chicken Coop!

I bet you are all like we are at SHR - still enjoying summer, not ready for it to leave - but starting to get those fall "nesting" feelings for warm and cozy in your colors, your fabrics and your food! We are slowly getting it together and I thought I would show you a few more photos of what is coming in the door - like this great cubby! Was a built in once upon a time with doors and shelves - when we got it it had none of those - just that great beadboard back!

Rose found this piece and it was almost a goner - you wouldn't know it now would you? A little carpentry and paint and stain and muscle and it is drop dead gorgeous!!

September Changes and New Beginnings!

GUESS WHAT????? Rose and Bonnie are coming back to Second Hand Rose!!! They will be sharing a spot and bringing their great brand of junk and art back to us! AND we have Kathie Armstrong of Kathie's Finds coming aboard for a couple of months at least (maybe more???)!! This sale is going to ROCK!! Most of us aren't anywhere near being ready or done and some of us haven't even brought anything new in yet - but I did manage to find some things that I think you will like!

I fell in love with this little goat cart of Angela's! Fill it with fall and harvest bounty, change it out to greens for the holidays, and then fill it to overflowing with flowers again in the spring!

Susan is of course 3/4 of the way to being done! Love everything I was seeing in her area!

Sandy used old wire fencing on her wall - how cool is that? Love everything about it - and it makes it really easy to hang stuff too!!

Lots of trunks coming in - how awesome are they as end tables, coffee tables and just for general storage! Think of all the treasures you could hide away - or store your blankets, out of season clothes, crafting items, family heirlooms, toys, magazines - anything and everything you can imagine!

I took soooo many photos of this month's sale cuz there are so many treasures that I didn't know where to start - or end! So get a cup of coffee, sit yourself down and enjoy the 30 pictures!!! Starting with Barb's area - and you know I am her biggest fan! She does traditional with a mix of modern and industrial and shabby and whimsical and always, always, always makes it work!

I love this old worktable Barb has in the center of her room! Perfect for family dining or projects!

LOVE the rusty old Miller sign - and underneath it is a great bar that Brad put together with an awesome tin front! You're gonna want it!

My over the top slightly shabby/slightly fru-fru area!! I just fell in love with the great Italian lamp and matching sconce. And the flowers on the lamp are on a separate dimmer switch - instant mood lighting!

One of my handsome husband's harvest tables. It is made from Douglas Fir that he salvaged from an old Burlington Northern boxcar! The paint colorings on it are fantastic! It is almost 7 feet long so you can seat everyone!

Just had to show the top of the table! I know I'm biased - but I think it turned out so nice! If my kitchen were bigger it would be staying at my house!

MaryAnn has a great mixture of junk this month! Lots of soft creamy colors, great smalls and comfy chairs!

Angela was still working on her space when I left - but this bench caught my eye! She has some great upholstered pieces in there too - and a couple pieces in the best shade of blue!

A great wicker set is out on the deck - along with tons of other fun stuff! We still have a couple of months to enjoy our yards!

This pink dresser of Cathy's is absolutely out of this world dreamy! And she has tons of great vintage fabrics, pillows and cloths that just scream "Take me home!"

I just love, love, love Susan's bright yellow sofa! She has it so comfy all piled with pillows and quilts! What a great napping spot!

I think this set of 4 vintage chairs are just a hoot! How much fun would they be in your breakfast nook?

Peter's center island is drop dead gorgeous! The top is from a warehouse pallet and sitting on the wire base - a match made in heaven! Enough room to slip a couple of stools under it, storage on the wire shelves, and the top removes very easily for moving!

Peter has 3 - count them THREE great warehouse carts just waiting to be a coffee table in your home! And different finishes too - and the kettle drum - a great one of a kind table!

Oh yeah - and this great dresser turned center island or work spot or whatever you want it to be. The top is phenomenal!

Sandy's spot wasn't quite finished yet - but her soft grays and whites - with that gorgeous red cupboard.................She really has an eye for finding great pieces and knowing how to display them! I think we are gonna have to check out her house!

Denise has this great cupboard in her area - she still wasn't finished either - but look quick at this cupboard - I don't think it will last long!

Dinah's spot is perfect as usual! So many interesting little things in it - a great upholstered chair, chippy shutters, gorgeous frames and suitcases - you know she is always a favorite!

This little piece of Brad and Amy's kept calling my name - over and over and over!

Is there anyone out there who is not in love with Ted's cupboards? I don't think so! As usual we have an array of different cupboards and styles. I am partial to this one with the shutters!

Tammy and Yvonne - our newest gals have absolutely outdone themselves! Their paint techniques and finishes are spot on! The creamy dresser with large mirror is an absolute must have!

New Beginnings - August Sale Starts to Come Together!

Did you notice that there was an extra week between the June and July sale? And we are on a very SHORT time frame between the July and August sale. So we should all be busting our butts to get some great treasures done for you guys! Unfortunately, the heat and humidity busted our butts - so now we are all behind and scurrying around like little mice to cram 3 weeks of work into 1 week! Will we do it?????? BUT OF COURSE!!!!! Some of us (Barb and Susan) are almost all done - drat those two - they always make the rest of us look bad!! But most of us are just getting our first loads in the door, still painting and building and just barely starting on placement! I still managed to get a few good photos tho - thank goodness for my son and his smart phone camera - I dropped my camera in a puddle on Saturday:( But I'll have a new one later this week! Can you see what Ted has used for the back of his cupboard? It is an old sign - with such great colors!

A nice size table and 4 fun metal chairs! Small enough to fit any home! And I just know that the chairs WILL HAVE seats in them by August 4th!

A beautiful dresser with mirror - and don't you just love the placement of the three lamps? There is nothing like lamps paired or tripled together at varying heights!

Barb has some of her great artwork this month. These tins with the little old purses are so sweet!

Wait til you see this in person - the mirrored top of a buffet - oh so pretty!

I'm loving this wire piece in MaryAnn's area - I can think of a hundred different uses - bet you can come up with some too!

Peter brought in this beautiful old cupboard that has been perfectly restored. Yep - drop dead gorgeous!

I will always and forever be in love with most everything in Susan's area! I love all of her colors! In front is a great old cabiny kind of sofa painted a bright yellow with lots of red showing thru - and it's pretty darn comfy too!

Lynn has this incredible cupboard top. And with a piece this beautiful, who needs the bottom? Hang it on your wall or stand it on top of whatever piece you happen to have!

Lynn has these INCREDIBLE theater seats - and this really cool metal door thing hanging on the wall. I can't decide what I like best!

An antique brass fixture that has been electrified - and it is 6' across!!! Got some cathedral ceilings that are just crying out for a large one-of-a-kind fixture? We've got it!!

This one you gotta see to believe - a circa 1950's chaise lounge in an incredible lime green and black fabric - and it plugs in and massages/vibrates you!!! But you don't have to plug it in!!

Knee High by the 7th of July!!

What a fun sale this is going to be!! We are really, really full and everyone has been working so hard to bring you the BEST of THE BEST - the one of a kind, the unusual, the piece that will make your room come together! I'll do 2 or 3 posts of photos cuz I took sooooo many - but I couldn't help myself - everything looks so good! And we still have a few more days to go of bringing in treasures!!!! So here we go!!! I happen to be a sucker for wheels or just about anything with a round shape - don't know why - but I am and so this month I thought I would share some of my collection with you!!! They make such great art!

More wheels, bicycle art and lots of color!!

We have another great cart this month to use as a coffee table!!! I know we get requests every month - and rumor has it that there is another one (or maybe two!!) ready and waiting in the wings!!

Pat's area is so full of......well, everything!!! She has bikes and colors and whites and rusts and incredible sconces (you're gonna have to take my word on that one cuz the photo didn't turn out!!), and gardeny stuff and tables and chairs and and and.............Yep, I've been in there a few times and haven't seen everything yet!

Angela isn't set up yet - but she has lots of very, very cool looking stuff packed in there waiting to be arranged! I think I could want the green chair!

We are packed outside too with so much color and unique items and seating and gardening items and tables and fire pit rings and things for your cabin! And Barb, Susan and MaryAnn have been working SOOOO hard on re-doing the deck! It now has some walls and is looking mighty cozy - You are gonna like it sure!

A set of great lockers and Susan's little orange set from her yard! Did you see it in my post a few weeks ago from Susan's home? It looked lovely in her yard didn't it? Well, now you can have the chance to have it look just as lovely in your yard!

Makes you want to run right up to the cabin doesn't it? I believe this duck boat is actually water worthy too - but it makes a great statement standing up!! Then pull up a chair and have a marshmallow!

I love all of this color out on the deck!

This is in Susan's spot - which is as usual TO DIE FOR!!!! She has tons of colors and pulls it all together so well. Her area always has a kind of global feel - but homey and comfy at the same time. Always one of my favorites!

Susan's Home

It's been awhile since I've showcased any of our homes - so thought it was about time. And since Susan is a favorite person/dealer of just about EVERYONE - thought we should showcase her home! Susan has a real eclectic style and her home shows that in every room. It is also a very comfortable and welcoming home. Susan shares her home with her husband Art, daughter Georgia and their 4 dogs and a bird! This gorgeous little orange set is in Susan's front yard! Isn't it awesome? Thank goodness she decided to keep it rather than sell it - sometimes that is a tough decision for us!

This is on the left side of the walk in the front yard. A pretty comfy spot to wave at the neighbors!

Susan's potting bench - love the simplicity of it! And love the green fence that matches the trim on her house!

Just outside Susan's backdoor is her covered patio area. This is where they spend a good portion of their time in the summer months. It is cozy little area with comfy seating. And none of the furniture pieces is actually outdoor furniture - just hardy enough to handle the breezes and raindrops that manage to blow in on the sides!

This built in unit is in the dining room. It is quite shallow so becomes the perfect spot to showcase family photos and small treasures!

I love the dining room - great old table, industrial bench, matching formal chairs on the other side! She makes it all work together!

Decorating our Yards and Gardens!

This has been a tough summer so far hasn't it? Too hot, too cold, too wet, too humid - seems like very few moments of Just Right! But, even with Minnesota weather extremes we love to be out in our yards. We thought you might enjoy taking a peek into some of our yards and gardens to see how we use our own "junk" to decorate our outdoor areas! This spot is in Barb's back yard - don't you just love it? What a nice spot to sit and dream!

At the back of Barb's house she has a spot with two Adirondack chairs - they get a new coat of color each year - this year she likes the bright yellow/orange shades. I think the idea is great - what a great way to add some fun color to your yard!

I love this screen door frame tucked into a corner - and below it is a very old wheelbarrow that belonged to Barb's father!

Barb has a great front porch - it always says "Welcome - come on up and sit a spell!" But this year she bought outdoor fabric and made drapes to frame the entrance. What a great idea that can be used on any porch or deck or patio or gazebo!

In Barb's backyard - grapevine entrance. So charming and old fashioned and homey!

The door into Barb's garage! How inviting is that???

Barb has this great industrial metal table set up in the back yard with multi-colored chairs! What a fun picnic spot! I think those burgers and salads would taste even better setting here!

Rose used a baker's rack in her garden. It is against her garage and fills up that big empty space so nicely! You could do the same with great outdoor hardy artwork or plants or use it as a buffet for your outdoor meals! Most baker racks are metal so can handle the rain and sun - so move them outside!

Rose made this piece of garden art out of 1 x 12's, bicycle wheels, metal rings and a gazing ball. It is topped off with a fence post cap - a pretty easy project!

An old grinding wheel stand - minus the wheel - makes a great piece of art and plant holder in my shade garden!

A pump in the garden is kinda standard - but it looks so nice don't you think?

I picked up this faucet at an auction and just hammered it in the ground. I love that it looks like it is watering my garden!

Windmills make a great trellis! This one is covered in Clematis and Rose's. I have another in my vegetable garden with beans growing up it, and a third with Sweet Peas wrapping around it. Only this one has the actual fan blade at the top - the others were missing it - but as a trellis that was just fine!

Part of an old barn door hinged to a couple of posts makes a great entry gate. Mine has Honeysuckle growing up the side.

This Red Wing crock was in a junk pile cuz someone had dropped it and a good portion of the bottom was missing. I just dug a hole, stuck it in, and filled the crock with soil. I never take it in over the winter and plant fresh annuals in it every year.

Another faucet of sorts - this long pipe was part of some kind of well. I like it in my garden over the birdbath!

This is another well pump. It was about 10 feet tall - we cemented it in the ground and it became the post for the fence/railing up to my front door!

The back of our property is our work area and vegetable garden area. It is all fenced in with various old barn doors, gates, and fencing sections. Other than this one section, I painted all the rest red so that even tho each 4' section is different - they are all uniform in color! Then I had to have some fun with this little section!

The First Looks at The June Sale!!

The shop is starting to look like we might have a sale!! Some folks are rushing to get most everything done by Friday cuz they have big plans for the holiday weekend - and some folks (like me!!) know that our big plans for the holiday weekend will be working at SHR! It has been like one big party every day that I have been in there this week - every one is excited about the sale, their new spots, their new walls, their holiday plans and just getting to hang out with each other! Last nite I think there was more jabbering, laughing, playing basketball, dancing to the music, and singing than there was any working - but all of that is what makes SHR the best place on earth!!!! Once again I forgot my camera last nite - Thank goodness Amy had hers!! So without further ado - a few glimpses into what is happening for the June sale!!

This settee has a matching chair and they are both THE BOMB!!!! Oh my gosh, the frames are gorgeous and sturdy and the coverings and innards will make you drool!

Little benches, garden fencing on a great barn door backdrop - yep, we do have it all!!

A Busy Month!

This month of May has gone by so fast! SO fast that I have been really neglectful of letting you guys know what has been going on in our world!!! Like all of you we have been dodging the rain drops, trying to avoid tornadoes (and I hope each and every one of you were able to do that as well!) and trying to get our yards and gardens ready for planting and gardening! Digging in the dirt is just the best isn't it!!

We've also been busy painting and building and fixing and repairing and refurbishing and turning this into that!

We've finally been able to get into our sheds and garages, been to auctions and on picking trips and found all kinds of wonderful treasures! So many in fact that the shop is filling up like crazy with all kinds of great things! I've been in and out of the shop 3 times during this month and forgotten my camera each and every time - but I did get the walls in my area painted the most incredible shade of blue, watched the deconstruction and reconstruction of the kitchen, moved lots of stuff in and out and all around - cuz we are doing some big changes this month and many of us have traded areas with each other! There are new colors on lots of walls, more lights and best of all - THE BEST JUNK in town, in the country and in the world!!!!!!! So start the countdown folks - we have it all coming in just for your shopping pleasure! June 2-3-4-5 we'll have the doors flung wide open, the floors, walls and ceilings filled with things for your home and life, tons of beautiful plants to make your homes and gardens even more beautiful - and we'll be waiting with smiles and laughter and good ideas and muscles to help you carry things!! See you then!!

Like this shelving unit made from a stock tank - bet you'll be the only person on the block with one of these!!

This buffet in Barb's area is a gorgeous creamy white! What a great storage or serving piece in any room - or an awesome vanity!!

Love, love, love this metal cart! Would be great in a kitchen or deck or craft room or any room you need something useful, practical and fun!

She is going to retire (for now!) and spend the summer kayaking and working in her garden and traveling! We will miss her so much - but I'm pretty sure she'll be back!!! AND she said she wants to come in and work some hours during the sales (when she is in town!) cuz she doesn't want to lose touch with all of you!

Pretty Faces from the April Sale

We had so much fun (as we always do!) with all of you at our April sale! And we had lots of special customers who brought their mom's and grandma's and dad's and siblings with them! Thought we would introduce you to a few of them - BUT I am having a very big problem - I can't find all of my notes that tell me who is who. So I am counting on you our SHR regulars to let us know names of some of these moms, grandma's, friends and kids!

I think this is Juniper and her mom! Juniper was just one week old on her first visit to SHR!!

And this is Bb (short for Bumblebee!!). I think she was 3 years old and she is Juniper's big sister. I think she was resting with Grandma!

Can't find my notes on this little one and her mom. The name Sophia is ringing a bell to me - but I could be wrong! Someone help me identify these folks!!

I know that this is Jen with her new baby Kate. I believe that Kate was only 10 days old on her visit to SHR!! We love our customers who start their kids early - never too young to be a fan of SHR!!

These two young fellas are Jay and Asher - and they are Kate's big brothers! Their dad was there too but I didn't get a photo of him - sorry dad!! These two were pretty cute and fun!

I can't find my notes on these two young ladies either but I know that they came down from the Brainerd area! So if you ladies would please introduce yourselves..............It is so nice to know that we have fans that come from distances - we have some that come from the Dakota's each month, all corners of Minnesota, Mason City, Iowa and Milwaukee! We even had a gal come in who bought a chandelier from us a year or so ago that she sent to Haiti to help rebuild a children's home - and she had photos of the home with the chandelier installed - how much fun is that!!!

This adorable little girl is Frankie - and she was pretty smiley!

And this fella is Dallas - he was playing hard to get!

We love to see all of the generations of our friends - and we really do get a kick out of meeting each and every one of you and hearing your stories! More and more wonderful pieces are coming in to the shop every minute - cupboards and tables and trunks and beds and lamps and chandeliers and doors and windows and mirrors and decor and doodads and pails and and and and......chairs!!! I was fascinated by some of them - and would like to take quite a few of them home with me!!! Like this little white chair for instance! And the gorgeous vintage rag rug - it is huge - a 7' diameter circle - and heavy and in such good shape and so pretty!!

A great bench and an awesome chair! I'm loving each of them - and the colors are screaming to me!

This vintage chair is so cute and distinguished at the same time! It is incredibly sturdy and looks great with the bark cloth pillow!

Almost There!!!!

We're getting closer and closer to April 7-8-9-10......The dates of the APRIL SHR SALE!!!!! Took some more photos yesterday so of course I just had to share!!!! Loving this gray color - it is warm and rich and deep and there is quite a bit of it around SHR! Not sure you like gray? I don't usually either - but these grays are so inviting! Check the current magazines and Restoration Hardware and you will see that GRAY is the IN color! If you look at our previous post you will see this dresser in it's before state - before sanding, painting, glazing, more sanding, more glazing - what a transformation!!

Signs of spring are EVERYWHERE in the shop! Crisp whites and cheery greens and yellows and blues and oranges - if you close your eyes you can almost smell the garden!

See what I mean? The fresh colors and planters and critters and watering cans - I'm ready to hit the garden center!!

Under this stack of pillows and throws - can you see the amazing aqua/turquoise colored chair??????????? I WANT IT!!!! I love the lines and the color - I think I would smile every time I looked at this chair!

You know that Ted's cupboards are the best always - but he's got a couple this sale with the most incredible stained glass doors! You've got to check them out!

I'm loving the original upholstery on this old rocker! It's mint - and comfortable!

Rose has got the kitchen area this month - and she has everything imaginable you might need to do some serious baking/cooking! AND lots of fun bits, pieces, and parts of junk, wood, doodads and whatchamacallits!

Let's see - I think I need a couple new pie plates and a springform pan.................

I've been awakened a few times now by birds singing outside my window! And here are some just waiting for a good home!

Mid-March Madness!!

It may only be mid month - but there is already lots of activity going on at SHR! We all have SPRING FEVER and are anxious to bring you along with us! We are excited to have spring and garden and Easter items to play with - and best of all......WE ARE GOING TO HAVE THE DECK OPEN FOR THE APRIL SALE!!!!

Nobody is anywhere near being done but when Mike and I went in to Buffalo today to bring in our first load of goodies we found all kinds of treasures to oooohhh and aaaaahhhh over! So of course I had to take pictures!!

A great nester, stock tank that has lots of possibilities, a fish trap and lots of antlers!

We were seeing lots of great shades of blues and greens and aquas and grays and white and pink and orange - a virtual rainbow of colors - all guaranteed to make you smile!

Don't you just LOVE this screen door frame tucked in by the white table? Ooohhh la la - I WANT!!

I'm LOVING this creamy white table - look at that incredible base! Almost a shame to put chairs around it and hide all of that beauty!

I had to try out this great upholstered chair done in a soft gray. It definitely gets my vote for comfort! If only I had brought a good book and a cup of tea with me - I wouldn't have gotten anything done!

You probably can't tell from this photo but these porch posts are some of the fattest ones I have ever seen! I can think of about a million and one uses - but mostly I was imagining them just lounging in the corner of my living room!

Susan gets the award so far for the most COLOR! Her spot is really coming together (and she has all new track lighting in there too courtesy of Brad!) and it is a winner already! All of her color drew me like a magnet!

Now who couldn't use a bright infusion of color like this in their home????????????

Kind of an odd picture I know - there are a pair of these wicker/rattan chairs stacked together. I didn't take them apart so I have know idea if they are upholstered or not - but I was loving the curve of the chairs!

The piece with the light bulb is an old stage light. I'm not sure what is going to happen to it - but Brad was saying something about turning it into a wall mounted or ceiling mounted fixture.........can't wait to see how it turns out!

I saw this cute green desk 2 rows of furniture back and thought the small size and great top and fun color looked pretty sharp!

I'm loving the detailing on this old dresser. What color do you suppose it will be by the time we see it next?

March Sale is Looking Good!

This is the hardest time of the year for all of us junkers - mighty slim pickins out there! No garage sales, no flea markets, very few auctions, and not a lot of dumpsters!!! What's a junker to do? You dig down deep into your stockpile - the stuff that has gotten stuffed to the back of the shed, the garage, the basement - and you turn that piece that you didn't have a clue what to do with a few months ago into something FABULOUS. You get inspired by working with what you've got. These mid-winter sales are some of my favorites for just that reason - we have to get inspired and creative with next to nothing - to look at a pile of mis-fit pieces and turn them into wonders! These sales bring out the best in us cuz we have to dig deep! So when I saw this sign in MaryAnn's area I knew it was the theme for the March sale!! INSPIRING - that is our goal - to be inspiring for you. I think we will accomplish that this month - so much fun stuff already in - and despite the snow falling this weekend - we are going to totally ignore it and move on to SPRING!!!! Early spring - touches of fresh color, soft color, bold color and crisp clean whites. It is amazing what a bit of color can do for a room! If you are like me and your home is decorated in dark colors year round - throw in a bright pillow or rug or throw or change out a side table for a brightly painted one - you don't have to re-decorate - just give yourself some small change - something that will breathe new life and vigor into you and your home! Believe me, you won't regret it!

So here are some photos of things to come - hardly anyone is even near to being set up - but the beginnings are so fabulous and inspiring and colorful and soft and energetic and warm that I just had to share them with you!!

Can you hear the birds singing? That early morning spring sound of life being renewed? Even if they are not outside your window yet you can still enjoy them with this great print!

I love a selection of children's chairs. They can fit into any decor, take up very little room, and even look great hanging from the walls!

Susan is back with us - we are all so happy! We missed her and her eclectic look! Look what she has done to her wall - it is even better in person!

Are you starting to think about garden parties? Statuary works wonders for ambiance - and are great all year round indoors and outdoors!

Coral - one of our newest gals has a nice selection of softer colors mixed in with some primitives - showing once again that styles can and SHOULD mix together!

This piece inspired me the most when I walked in! The great old paint on the door - that incredible energetic, enlivening color - made me feel I could do anything! Wait til you see the other side!

Brad and Amy have been doing a ton of remodeling - and underneath that horrid old grey indoor/outdoor carpet that was in the front right side of the shop found these great floors! It took a lot of work to get that carpet up - it was glued on to last an eternity! But I think it was well worth the effort don't you?

Did I mention bright, fun, energetic color?

And totally in your face, bright fun colors?

Here is the other side of the door!!!!! Yeah, it's awesome! Their plate is overflow-oo-ing!!!!

Brad and Amy Johnson - the owners of SECOND HAND ROSE! Brad and Amy have been married for 17 amazing years (Amy's quote!); have three absolutely adorable (my quote!) boys - Hunter 12, Carter 8, and Parker 6. They have worked together at Amy's family business Brush Masters for 18 years. Recently Brad took on a new adventure and partnered with Brenshell Construction - a home building company. They miss working together every day as they both feel they do their best work when they are together.

Brad and Amy are totally family oriented people. Amy works with her father, sisters, aunts, cousins and other family members at Brush Masters. Amy's aunt, mother and step-father are new dealers at SHR. Both Brad's and Amy's family are in and out of the shop on a regular basis. They are all so connected and supportive - which is how Brad and Amy seem to manage 3 boys, critters, 2 jobs, a new business, the remodeling of their cabin (which they are doing themselves), homework and the boys activities so effortlessly! They believe that as a family there is NOTHING they can't handle! They eat dinner together every nite, enjoy singing and dancing with the boys (who are determined to be on American Idol!!) and own every board game known to man!

Amy tells me that she and Brad are their boys biggest fans and encourage them to be all that they can be. You will find all three of the boys roaming around the shop at various times - they are helpful, well mannered, cute, loving and FUNNY! We have all taken them to our hearts!

The whole family LOVES to spend time at their cabin up near the Brainerd lakes area. They love to swim and fish and have campfires and bring their extended family along on a regular basis. They also love to junk while they are Up North and have found some of their "best junk" while at the cabin! The boys also love to junk and dig for treasures and they all enjoy the stories involved in each item - what was it, who used it, what can it be!

Brad and Amy are absolutely the most positive people you will ever meet. They believe in empowering their boys - and everyone else they run across. They are encouraging of their boys and our hopes and dreams and believe that with a little help and a lot of positive reinforcement there is nothing a person can't handle or accomplish. They wrap themselves in family and friends and have already made all of us at SHR feel a part of a very loved inner circle! I think you will feel the same when you get to know them - the positive energy that they have infused into the shop will have your spirits soaring and I know that you all will come to love them as much as we already do! Construction Continues!

The February sale is over and the March sale is coming up SO FAST!!!! The dates are March 3-4-5-6. We barely have enough time to breath - much less create, build, paint, set up etc - but Brad and Amy NEVER seem to run out of steam! Between sales this month there is more new lighting going in, walls being torn down, doorways being opened up and other doorways being closed up! We'll have a whole new look again for March! Be sure to come on in and check out the changes - along with all of the incredibly wonderful junk we have in store for you!!!!!!

Getting Ready for February

I spent quite a bit of time at SHR yesterday - and the joint was hopping!!! Lots of incredibly wonderful junk coming in - some improvements to the shop have been done - lots of catching up as we have been so busy taking time off so now we are sooooo busy catching up!!!!

Most of us have a lllooonnnggg way to go til we are ready for you guys - but I thought I would give you a sneak peek of some things that I spied - things I am pretty sure you will want!

The first was this chair - covered in beautiful white fur - and also the fur pillow! Brad and Amy came across some vintage fur coats that were in tough shape - so they cut them apart and have been very busy covering chairs and ottomans in beautiful furs - take my word for it - you will be drooling!!

A new sign made to hang behind the desk! We also have a new more efficient desk and it is in a new place! I think you will all be impressed! We also have some new lighting here and there - and more will be coming in as time allows! The track lighting I found in my area was the best present ever!!!! No more darkness and I can focus them wherever I want!!! There are also newly painted walls and floors - not everything yet - but a great start! We will be sparkling!!!!

Saw these 2 toile covered chairs and immediately was trying to figure out where I could use them in my house!!!!! I'm betting they fly out!

We have a new dealer with us for February - she's checking out the waters with a very feminine look - lots of blues, pinks and ivories! Her paint jobs are INCREDIBLE! I think you will be impressed - and want it all!

Nothing like a little vintage huh? Love that 50's look!

Music room - den - living room - bedroom? Something for the musician in us all!!!!

Rose and Cathy are working on a space together for this month (cuz Cathy and Brian decided to just drop their stuff and head down to the warmness of Florida!!!!!) Can't imagine why anyone would want to leave these -29* temps!!!! But..........Rose worked hard combing their items and will finish up when she gets back from her warm weather jaunt to New Orleans and Florida!

Personally - I'm pretty sure I just gotta have this sign!!!

This small writing desk with hutch top is so sweet. And the glass in the top piece is all wavy - way, way, way cool!

A wonderful bench for your entryway - have you noticed how much white and fresh spring colors you are seeing?????

This stained glass piece - too awesome for words! You just gotta come in and see it!

Rose managed to get some of her funky art work done before she took off to warmer climates!

I'm LOVING the antlers with the hat collection!

A couple of the fur ottomans that I noticed stuffed behind a stack of furniture! The bottom one has an alligator look on the sides with dark fur top! Pretty darn amazing!
