SECOND HAND ROSE - The Beginning

Expect the unexpected at SECOND HAND ROSE, home of the original occasional sale.

SECOND HAND ROSE was brought to life by owner Rosalie Darden of
Buffalo, Minnesota. The concept of the four day sale was sparked by Rose’s desire to have a shop that would be a “fit” for creative women who want flexible, part-time self employment. Opening the doors occasionally gives our dealers a month to gather their merchandise and set up their corner of the shop.

Rose’s depression era upbringing provided her with a “make do, can do” work ethic. Why not make do with “junk” and “less than perfect”? We rehab old, not necessarily valuable furniture and home décor, create one of kind items, use splashy colors, have a sense of humor and never let a good idea go to waste. Between sales we repair, repaint, reupholster, and reinvent solid used furniture and good junk.

Most people thought that opening the doors of a shop only four days a month was ridiculous. And yet SECOND HAND ROSE is thriving thirteen years later and has inspired occasional sales across the country, nine in Buffalo alone.

SECOND HAND ROSE is shared by fifteen of the most talented and creative dealers around. Our ambition is to have a high quality shop with good prices, friendship and fun. At our shop we enjoy educating rookie dealers. We share ideas opinions and advice about the phenomenon of the occasional sale concept. We keep up to date with the latest color trends, seasonal ideas, usable furniture and handcrafted artwork. All of these add up to “The Unexpected” that makes SECOND HAND ROSE so popular.
